‘Pour me another one please, Ramzi,’ Véronique said, passing her empty glass.

‘Make it two,’ said Gabriel.

‘Well, what did he want? A bribe or something?’

‘Maman, you know very well how the Caïd has been helpful with one or two things, and especially with papa’s accident. Really,’ he said turning to Ramzi, ‘things have changed since my mother's day. The Caïds are all educated at the Institut Royal de l’Administration Territoriale alongside the Royal Armed Forces, and represent the Ministry of the Interior. They apply government policy and help settle disputes and are pretty well paid. Speaking of which, that was why he was here.’

‘Thank you for the communiqué,’ Véronique said. ‘And don’t make that face Gabriel. Now tell us what was the problem?’

‘Remember that issue with the land? Well it seems that Adil persuaded the five nouabs of the Al Zalaja tribe to refuse to sell.’

‘Nouabs?’ Ramzi asked.

‘The tribal representatives, The Caïd feels he’s been insulted as he has a hand in pointing the nouabs in the tribe. It seems the PVC has been on his back about it and, actually, I’m pretty insulted too, as Adil effectively stuck a knife in my back.’

‘Poor Adil,’ Véronique said.

‘And what, maman, do you mean by, Poor Adil? He has no right to interfere!’ Gabriel said angrily. ‘I think there is something in the labour code about that. I am going to phone Maître Meryam, our lawyer.’

Standing at the door, Julia stood listening. She laughed. ‘One way or other we have to get rid of him,’ she smiled.

‘I think I need another drink too,’ Ramzi muttered.
